Garlic
I discovered this garlic at a farmer's market.
From bulb to flower head it measured 3 feet.
My sketchbook is 9" by 12".
Some adjustments had to be made.

The Vacant Lot
I am intrigued by a recently discovered vacant lot.
All that remains, where a house once stood,
are the vestiges of a garden and opportunistic plants.
Throughout the year I will be watching what
emerges and what I discover. Right now there
are a lot of prickly plants which is fun for me.

Thistly Thistle
If I were a plant
It seems to me
This is the plant
That I would be
Often found in waysides, lanes and fields, ideally near the ocean.
Does not thrive in shade, preferring a sunny location.
Not frost tender, tolerant of strong winds.
Can be persistent and prickly.

Iris Stem
A stem of iris drawn before and after blooming, two times in the life of a plant that I find to be the most beautiful and fascinating.

Wisp blowing in the wind
When out for a walk I often find little bits of plants which I bring home to draw. They possess a certain charm and a lot of character. They appear to be delicate but they are tough little things. I admire them.
I call them wisps.

Wayside Plants #2
On my daily walks I am always looking for what I call Wayside Plants. These are the plants that are not intentionally placed, they have placed themselves. They are plants that are usually not welcomed into gardens and yet they persist and survive. I admire their tenacity.

Branches and Blue Sky
After days of grey grey grey I needed to see some blue sky if only in this photograph taken last September in Australia.

Eggplant Friends
When I positioned these two eggplants to paint it appeared that they
had developed a relationship and I was there to capture the moment.
Wayside Plants #1
A walk along the cliffs in Mendocino, California gathering plants
to draw that evening at the campsite was a perfect day for me.

The Majestic Cardoon
The majestic cardoon, apparently highly invasive, has become unwanted in Argentina, California and Australia.
I have always been attracted to the renegade.
